Sergeant Geoffrey Horace Henry Mohr (Service No:24211) enlisted in the RAAF on 20 June 1940 as an Aircraftman I at No 3a Moble Unit Cairns - mustered as Fitter. He was described in his application interview as 'speaks fluently, intelligent and observant. Very good type' (NAA). Sergeant Mohr was attached to 23, 24 and 75 Squadrons and served in New Guinea and the Philippines. He was attached to Air Technical Intelligence Unit in October/December 1944 when he was awarded Mention in Dispatches - 'During typhoon conditions which existed at Leyte between 29th October and 11th December 1944, he performed duties on the mechanical aspects of enemy aircraft shot down on that island and collected valuable information technical matters' (NAA). Sergeant Mohr was attached to 3 Personnel Depot at Discharge on 25 September 1945.
Geoffrey was born in Launceston, Tasmania in 1916, eldest of three children of Henry (Harry) Mohr (b1890 in Longford, Tasmania) and Norah Ellen Smith (b1893 in Launceston, Tasmania). Harry (a Motor Mechanic) and Norah (a Musician) married in 1915 in Launceston, where they settled and raised their family and Harry worked as a Mechanic. In 1929 they moved to Melbourne, Victoria where Harry worked as a Motor Engineer and was a partner in Chevron Motors in Hamilton - he also was involved in car racing. Following Harry's death in 1941, Norah remarried and moved to Cairns, QLD.
Geoffrey worked for his father and as a Draughtsman for Nonporite Pty Ltd in Melbourne before moving to Cairns, QLD in 1939, where he worked as a Mechanic for Bolton's Cairns before enlisting in the RAAF. In Melbourne in 1941, Geoffrey married Marcelle Maud Keddie (b1918 in Sydney, NSW) and following his Discharge from the RAAF, Geoffrey and Marcelle lived in Ipswich QLD, where Geoffrey was an Engineer. The couple later settled in Cairns, where they raised their family and Geoffrey worked as an Engineer until retirement. Geoffrey and Marcelle both died on the Gold Coast, QLD in 2014.
