Hugh was the son of Thomas Arthur Henderson (b1890 in Amherst, Victoria) and Dorothy Henderson (b1895 in Mysia, Victoria). Thomas - a Labourer - and Dorothy married in 1921 in Maryborough, Victoria where they raised their family.

Hugh was eighteen years of age in 1943 when he enlisted in the RAAF. He was a Leading Aircraftman (Service No:145711) attached to 7 Operational Training Unit when he was Discharged in February 1946. Hugh's father Thomas (Private; Service No:V361273) served with the ACMF in WWII.

Hugh was working as a Carpenter in Warwek, Maryborough, Victoria in 1950 when he married Valma (Val) Jean Smart (b1925 in Ararat, Victoria) - Val was a Clerk. Hugh and Val settled in Maryborough where Hugh worked as a Carpenter until the late 1960's. In the early 1970s they moved to Frankston, where Hugh worked as a Teacher. Hugh and Val both died in 2015.
