10 Oct 1943: | Honoured Distinguished Flying Medal, Air War NW Europe 1939-45, 10991 Flight Sergeant Alexander William Wales-Citation. Flight Sergeant Wales has invariably pressed home his attacks with the utmost determination. He has displayed his qualities of leadership and his enthusiasm for operational duties has proved a fine example to members of his crew. | |
23 Mar 1944: | Honoured Distinguished Flying Cross, Air War NW Europe 1939-45, 10991, Flight Lieutenant Alexander William Wales, D.F.M Citation: Distinguised Flying Cross. Now on his second tour of operational duty, Flight Lieutenant WALES has taken part in attacks against such heavily defended objectives as Berlin, Frankfurt, Stettin, Leipzig and Schweinfurt. Throughout his dogged determination, skill and devotion to duty have inspired a high standard of morale in the crew. On one occasion in December, 1943, during an attack on Frankfurt a fire broke out in the aircraft while over the target. Amid dense smoke Flight Lieutenant WALES pressed home his attack successfully. The fire was later overcome and the aircraft returned safely to base. | |
