Served and suffered during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

94 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 28th January 1930, Private William Alexander B. H. Carpenter, referred to as Joby, 35th Battalion (Reg No-52), labourer from Henry Street, Glebe, (Merewether), New South Wales and 3 Buchanan Street, Merewether, N.S.W., father of one (Joyce), a son, William Frederick Carpenter, born 24.1.1930 (stillborn), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 37. PRESBYTERIAN-11SE. 8.

Born at The Junction, New South Wales on the 23rd May 1892 to Job, died 13.7.1911, Newcastle, N.S.W., age? of Kendrick Street, The Junction, N.S.W., and Janet (Jennett) Carpenter, died 13.12.1902, Newcastle, N.S.W., age?, not listed on Sandgate Cemetery database of Kendrick Street, The Junction, N.S.W.; husband of Lillian I Carpenter nee Bassington (married 1921, Wickham, N.S.W., remarried 1932, Newcastle, N.S.W. to James H Grothen, died 1960, Hamilton, N.S.W., Lillian died 3.8.1984, age 87), Joby enlisted on the 9th January 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Wounded in action - 10.6.1917 (gassed, Battle of Messines).

Proceeded on leave to England from 16.3.1918 to 31.3.1918 and 5.9.1918 to 19.9.1918.

Admitted to hospital 6.4.1918 (synovitis right knee, slight - pain, swelling, and stiffness in the knee joint).
Commenced return to Australia 11.12.1918.

Joby arrived home invalided on the 1st February 1919, being discharged medically unfit on the 20th March 1919.

Mr. Carpenter’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates and The Junction Soldiers' Monument. Name would probably be inscribed on the South Newcastle Rugby League Football Club Roll of Honour.

The tragic circumstances of Joby’s death were reported from a Tighes Hill accident where the Acting Coroner states no blame attached to the ambulance driver. (see links)

I have placed poppies at Joby’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
