Sydney was the son of Arthur George and Louisa Mary Smith, of Laidley, Queensland.
His father 216 Pte Arthur George Smith was an original member of the 42nd Battalion and enlisted at the age of 44. He was returned to Australia, 1 November 1917, basically for being too old. An older half-brother, 5069 Pte Charles Francis Crack M.M., 47th Battalion, returned to Australia, 19 October 1918.
