Biography contributed by Lukas Tagell

Melbourne Hinchcliffe was born in Melbourne, Victoria, on 30 March 1913. Before enlisting, he worked as a motor mechanic and fitter, where he developed strong practical skills and gained the trust of his employer, who described him as a reliable and capable worker with the ability to take responsibility and instruct others.

He enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in July 1940, bringing his mechanical experience into military service. Trained as an aircraft fitter, he contributed to the maintenance and repair of aircraft, playing an important role behind the scenes in supporting wartime operations.

Hinchcliffe’s service was not without difficulty. He suffered from a chronic stomach condition that began prior to enlistment and continued throughout the war, at times affecting his health and efficiency. Despite this, he remained in the Air Force for the duration of the conflict. His continued service and eventual promotion to Sergeant reflect his reliability, skill, and determination.

While his service was not marked by combat or decoration, it represents the essential work carried out by many who ensured that operations could continue. His contribution, though less visible, formed part of the broader effort that supported the war.
