Sergeant Lawrence Joseph Toogood (Service No:5002) enlisted in the RAAF on 23 October 1939 as an Aircraftman I at Personnel Transit Centre Laverton - mustered as Steward. In 1940 he was promoted to Leading Aircraftman and Corporal, and in 1942 to Sergeant. Sergeant Toogood served in New Guinea (19 October 1942 - 20 October 1943) and in Darwin NT (29 June 1945 - 24 August 1945). Sergeant Toogood was attached to 1 Personnel Depot at Discharge on 23 October 1945.

Born Walter Joseph Toogood, Laurie was born in 1915 in Melbourne, Victoria - the youngest of five children of Thomas (Tom) Michael Toogood (b1883 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Ethel Mary Anne Kibby (b1882 in Temora, NSW). Tom (a Blacksmith) and Ethel married in 1905 in Melbourne, Victoria where they settled and raised their family. Tom worked as a Blacksmith/farrier before he enlisted in the AIF in 1915 (Private; Service No:4011) - he died 'At Sea' in 1917 from wounds received in France.

Laurie worked as a Labourer, Chauffeur and Steward in Melbourne before enlisting in the RAAF in 1939. In Melbourne in 1940 Lauirie married Shirley Joyce Forde (b1922 in Melbourne, Victoria) and following his Discharge, Laurie and Shirley settled in Melbourne where they raised their family and Laurie worked as a Driver. Shirley died in 1970, and Laurie remarried in 1971 - Phyllis Jane Knipe Lawson (nee Sperring; b1918 in Melbourne, Victoria). Laurie died in 1978 and Phyllis in 1998.
