Thomas's parents were Thomas Gilvear and Christina Smith. Thomas was living at Samson Creek/Samsonvale when he enlisted on 29 September 1916 at Brisbane. His occupation is listed as a labourer. Thomas married Kathleen Emily Thistlethwaite a well-known pioneering family of the district in November 1916. Kathleen's four brothers enlisted in the war, one of whom was killed. Thomas and Kathleen lived in Samsonvale for most of their life, they had two children. Thomas died aged 76.
