Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

One of four siblings (David, Walter, Irene and William) who served in WWII, Aircraftwoman Irene Veronica Fisher (Service No:110885) served in the WAAAF - mustered as SQA - with 6 and 4 RAAF Hospitals (Staff) from 1 November 1943 to 15 August 1945.

Irene was born in Sunbury, Victoria in 1923, fourth of nine children of Alfred (Alf) Joseph Fisher (b1892 in Narrandera, New South Wales) and Veronica Ellen Falvey (b1899 at Riddells Creek in Victoria). Alf was a Labourer in 1917 when he enlisted in the AIF (Private; Service No:794) on 16 April 1917, and was in Sunbury in Victoria on 29 September 1917 when he and Veronica married. Following his Discharge from the Army, Alf and Veronica settled in Sunbury where they raised their family and Alf worked as a Labourer and later as a Mental Asylum Attendant.

Irene was a Process Worker in Sunbury in 1943 when she enlisted in the WAAAF. Following her Discharge, Irene was a Florist in Melbourne in 1946 when she married her first husband Raymond (Ray) Harold Oehme (b1917 at Murray bridge, South Australia) - Ray, a Metal Finisher, was in the RAAF (Leading Aircraftman; Service No:166112). Irene and Ray settled in Adelaide, South Australia and divorced in 1959. Irene remarried in 1969 in Unley to Leonard (Len) Albert Werrey (b1922 in Unley, South Australia) - Len served in the RAN (Leading Coder; Service No:24692) in WWII. Irene and Len settled in Adelaide, where Len was a Butcher. Irene died in 2002 and Len in 2015.
