Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Fred was the son of William Hampton (b1871 in NSW) and Matilda Jane Harper (b1875 in Annandale, Victoria). William (a Contractor/Miner) and Matilda married in Boulder/Kalgoorlie, WA in 1905. The family lived in the Kalgoorlie Region (Boulder, Mt Margaret and Mt Leonora) where William was a Contractor before moving to Wagin in 1911. By the late 1920s William was working in Dowerin WA and Matilda was in Perth. By the late 1930s both William and Matilda were in Perth.

Fred had been working as a Miner and was in Perth WA in 1939 when he married Eleanor Jean Cole (b1911 in Kalgoorlie, WA) - Eleanor was working in Perth as a Clerk. Fred stated on his Attestation Papers that he was a Mechanic - currently unemployed - when he enlisted in the RAAF in February 1941 (in the 1941 Electoral Roll he is listed as a Miner at Youanmi, Mt Magnet, WA and Eleanor was living in Money St in Perth).

Fred served as a Leading Aircraftman (Service No:29802) - Trainee Mechanic, Flight Mechanic and Fitter - at Pearce, No 4 Aircraft Depot Kalgoorlie Boulder, and 35 Squadron. He was attached to No 17 Repair and Servicing Unit when he was Discharged in December 1945.

Fred and Eleanor settled in West Perth where Fred worked as a Truck Driver until his death in 1950. Eleanor died in 1980.
