Son of Lawrence Ulstrup and Catherine Amelia Ulstrup nee Unna of Franklin Street, Adelaide, SA. Brother of William Peter Ulstrup who returned to Australia on 1 January 1918 having served with the 27th Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 15 August 1915 aboard HS Themistocles disembarking on 11 September 1915.

On 7 June 1919 John married Doris Ethel Jaehne in the Church of Christ Chapel, Adelaide, SA

At the time of his death John was residing in the Seaton Park, SA area
