64 years ago today, on the 22nd August 1960, Private Benjamin Charles Hopton, 56th Battalion (Reg No-1141A), miner from Thomas Street, Adamstown, New South Wales, father of two, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 72. CATHOLIC 1-A Com. 10.

Born at Lambton, New South Wales on the ? ? 1887 to Samuel Booth, married railway fettler from Thomas Street, Adamstown, New South Wales and 43 Victoria Street, Adamstown, N.S.W., enlisted 13.3.1917, West Maitland, N.S.W., Light Trench Mortar Battery (bomber), Reg No-N75676, discharged medically unfit-18.4.1917, stated age-40 years 7 months, actual age 59!, died 6.5.1933, Adamstown, N.S.W., age 74, buried at METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 5 SW. 45, and Hannah Hopton nee Hemmings, died 11.9.1920, Newcastle Hospital, N.S.W., age 60, sleeping at METHODIST 2 (PRIMITIVE) 5 SW. 45, from Thomas Street, Adamstown, New South Wales; husband of Elizabeth Ellen Hopton nee King, married 1920, Hamilton, N.S.W., died 19.11.1965, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 75, sleeping here, Ben enlisted on the 11th December 1915 with the 35th Battalion at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.

Admitted to hospital 14.3.1917 (bronchitis, otis media, severe).

Commenced return to Australia 10.1.1918.

Ben arrived home on the 3th March 1918, being discharged medically unfit (deafness left ear) on the 16th April 1918.

Mr. Hopton’s name has been inscribed on the Adamstown Citizens' Memorial, Adamstown Municipal District Roll of Honor, Adamstown Methodist Church Honour Roll, Pride of Adamstown Lodge, Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows Roll of Honour and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Ben’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
