Sergeant Arnold Gilbert Marks (Service No:52170) enlisted in the RAAF as an Aircraftman I on 19 March 1942 - graded as Radio Operator - and was attached to 1 Radar School Richmond, SHQ Laverton, 1 Embarkation Depot (ED) Ascot Vale and in the Northern Territory at 55 Operational Base Unit (OBU) Birdum and 31 Radar Station Darwin. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman in 1942, in 1943 he served in the NT with 31 Radar Station Point Keats, 44 Radar Wing Adelaide River, and 55 OBU Birdum before promotion to Corporal and returning to Victoria where he was atatched to 1 ED Ascot Vale and 13 Radar Station Metung - graded as Radar Direction Finding (RDF) Operator. Through 1944 Corporal Marks was attached to 1 Radar Station Wedge Island South Australia, 352 Radar Station Richmond Victoria and Sattler NT, 110 Motor Fighter Control Unit (MFCU) Sattler and Darwin. In 1945 Sergeant Marks served in Morotai (16 January 1945 - 24 August 1945) and was attached to 310 Radar Station at Discharge on 4 September 1945.

Born in Koroit, Victoria in 1917, Gilbert was eldest of two children of Arnold Gilbert Marks Snr (b1890 in Nhill, Victoria) and Elsie May Congdon (b1890 in Melbourne, Victoria). Arnold was a Saddler in Wallaura, Victoria when in 1914 in Melbourne, Victoria he and Elsie - a Machinist in Melbourne - married. They lived in Wallaura and Koroit where they raised their family and Arnold was a Saddler. Arnold served with the ACMF in WWII (Private; Service No:V353014) and, following Elsie's death in 1949, he moved to Portland.

Gilbert worked in Portland as a Radio and Electrical Mechanic and Dealer. In 1941 he married Mary (Gert) Gertrude Stephens (b1913 in Warracknabeal, Victoria). Following his Discharge, Gilbert and Gert settled in Portland where they raised their family and Gilbert was a Radio Dealer. In the mid 1960s Gilbert and Gert moved to Geelong where Gilbert was a TV Technician until his death in 1979. Gert died in 1995.
