Leading Aircraftman George Edward Handley (Service No:118954) enlisted in the RAAF at No 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne on 29 September 1942 as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Trainee Technical, then Wireless Assistant and Wireless Maintenance Mechanic. Promoted to LAC on 10 December 1944, his first application for Discharge in 1945 was rejected on the basis that 'owing to the shortage in the manning position of the mustering in which the airman is employed, and the fact that he is serving in an operational area ....' (NAA; Memorandum). LAC HAndley served with 82 Squadron and was attached to 5 Radio Installation and Maintenance Unit at Discharge on 5 February 1946.

George was born in Coburg, Melbourne, Victoria in 1917, third of five children of William Thomas Handley (b1866 in Warwickshire, England) and Olive Evelyn Odgers (b1888 in Boort, Victoria). William immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1889, arriving in Melbourne on board the Warwick. William and Olive married in 1911 in Coburg, where they settled and raised their family and William was a Plumber. By 1921 the family had settled in Warragul, where William established Handley & Sons Plumbers - employing his three sons.

George was a Plumber in Warragul in 1941 when he married Jean Forsyth Lacey (b1919 in Warragul, Victoria). George and Jean settled in Warragul, where they raised their family and George was a Plumber (Warragul Plumbers with brothers Robert and Ken). George died in 1993 and Jean in 1999.
