The fifth of seven children of James Alderson Howson (b1876 in Durham, England) and Minnie Mary Ann Ballard (b1879 in Adelaide, South Australia), Harold was born in Fremantle WA in 1904. James (a Painter) had emigrated in 1880, arriving in Fremantle WA on board the Robert Morrison. James and Minnie married in 1897 in Fremantle WA, and lived in Kalgoorlie, Perth and Fremantle where James was a Painter.
Harold was working as a Painter in Perth WA in 1929 when he married Ina Gertrude Brown (b1909 in Lion Mill, Mt Helena WA).
