Died on this date – 8th September…… Private Walter Barton Bamford was born at Macdonaldtown, Sydney, NSW in 1878.
Walter Barton Bamford married Norma Josephine Henrietta Woodcroft on 21st October, 1916 at Summer Hill, Sydney, NSW.
Ellen Sophia Bamford, mother of Walter Barton Bamford, died on 17th April, 1917 at Marrickville, Sydney, NSW.
Norma Josephine Henrietta Bamford, wife of Walter Barton Bamford, died on 19th May, 1917 at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown, Sydney, NSW.
Walter Barton Bamford enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 10th August, 1917 as a 39 year old, widower, Clerk from Ashfield, Sydney, NSW.
Private Walter Barton Bamford embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Ulysses (A 38) on 19th December, 1917 with the 1st Infantry Battalion, 26th Reinforcements & disembarked at Suez on 16th January, 1918. From there he sailed to Taranto, Italy then entrained to Cherbourg & disembarked at Southampton, England on 13th February, 1918.
Private Bamford was posted to 1st Training Battalion at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 13th February, 1918. He proceeded to France on 17th June, 1918 & joined 1st Battalion from 26th Reinforcements in France on 30th June, 1918.
Private Bamford was admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance on 20th July, 1918 with Scabies. He was discharged & rejoined his Battalion on 28th July, 1918.
Private Walter Barton Bamford was wounded in action on 25th August, 1918. He was admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance on 25th August, 1918 with shrapnel wounds to right side & abdomen then transferred to Casualty Clearing Station. Private Bamford was transferred & admitted to 6th General Hospital at Rouen, France on 26th August, 1918 with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to side & abdomen. He was transferred to England on 28th August, 1918 on Hospital Ship Gloucester Castle.
Private Bamford was admitted to Beaufort War Hospital, Bristol, England on 30th August, 1918. He died suddenly at 11.45 am on 8th September, 1918 at Beaufort War Hospital, Bristol, England from wounds received in action – GSW to left side – severe fleshy; acute Septicaemia & Heart Failure.
Private Walter Barton Bamford was buried in Arnos Vale Cemetery, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England where 21 other WW1 Australian Soldiers are buried. His name is remembered on the CWGC Screen Wall & he has a flat Memorial Stone.
