Corporal Walter Joseph Kendall (Service No:66329) enlisted in the RAAF at No 2 Recruiting Centre Sydney on 18 June 1942 as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Blacksmith - posted to 5 Aircraft Depot (AD) Wagga. Described in his Attestation Papers as 'Hard working type from country' (NAA), he was promoted in 1943 to Leading Aircraftman (1 July 1943) and then Corporal (1 August 1943). Corporal Kendall was attached to 26 Repair and Salvage Unit (RSU) at Discharge on 14 November 1945.
Walter was born in West Wyalong, New South Wales in 1908, only child of William Joseph Kelly (aka Kendall; b1870) and Elizabeth (Beth) Gillies (nee Fisher; b1873 in Narrandera, New South Wales). William (a Miner) and Beth (a Divorcee with two sons) married in Sydney in 1902 and settled in West Wyalong and Lockhart where they raised their family and William was a Miner until his death in 1917. Beth settled in West Wyalong, where she raised her sons and was a Shopkeeper.
Walter was a Blacksmith and Wheelwright in West Wyalong, and in 1933 in Sydney married Agnes Edith McMurtrie (b1907 in Orange, New South Wales). Walter and Agnes settled in West Wyalong, where they raised their family and Walter owned his Blacksmith business. Following his Discharge from the RAAF, Walter returned to West Wyalong, where he was a Blacksmith until his death in 1966. Agnes died in 1988.
