Son of Andrew Wilson Veitch and Margaret Veitch nee McHenry of Ascot Street, Ballarat, Victoria.
Prior to enlisting Hugh had been a member of the Ballarat Rifle Club.
Brother of John Tennant Veitch who returned to Australia on 8 June 1919 having served with the 1st Tunnelling Corps; Andrew Wilson Veitch who returned to Australia on 5 July 1919 having served with the 37th Battalion.
Commenced return to Australia on 24 December 1918 aboard HT Takada disembarking on 11 February 1919
