Son of Leonard Thomas West, 'Lenlily' Ester Street, Burwood, NSW.
Born in England on August 9, 1897, Leonard was educated at the West Square School. His connection with the Sydney Morning Herald began in November 1916 when he was engaged as an assistant stereotyper in place of one of the men who had enlisted. He remained in the position till April 1918, when he himself volunteered for sercie, sailing shortly afterwards with the reinforcments for the Field Engineers. He was only a week or two in France when the Armistice was signed.
