Flight Sergeant Edgar John Barby (Service No:52245) enlisted in the RAAF on 21 March 1942 as an Aircraftman I at No 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne - mustered as Flight Rigger. Promoted to LAC in April, he was described in his Attestation Papers as ' Keen and alert. Good competitive spirit' (NAA: 1943) and embarked for England on 5 May 1944, where he was promoted to Flight Sergeant - mustered as Airman Pilot. Flight Sergeant Barby was medically boarded in 1945 and repatriated to Australia as medically unfit for service. He was atatched to 7 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) Denilquin at Discharge on 28 June 1945.

Ted was born in Lismore, Victoria in 1922, eldest of four children of John William Barby (b1896 in Foxhow, Victoria) and Mary (Molly) Ruth Meade (b1899 in Cobden, Victoria). John (a Labourer) and Molly met through waltzing competitions and married in 1921 in Camperdown. They lived in Foxhow, where they raised their family and John was a Labourer, before settling at Port Fairy in the mid 1920s. John was a Labourer and Farmer.

Ted was working as a Carpenter in 1940 when he married Elsie Myrtle Hollis (b1921 in Hamilton, Victoria) and in 1942 enlisted in the RAAF. Following his Discharge in 1945, Ted and Elsie settled in Portland, Victoria where they raised their family and Ted was a Builder. Ted died in 2002 and Elsie in 2014.
