Leslie was the youngest of seven children of Carl (John) Johan Nilsson (b1860 in Sweden) and Mary Theresa Kennedy (b 1869 in Sydney, NSW). John (a Seaman) arrived in Sydney in 1882 and he and Mary married in 1886 in Sydney, NSW. John worked as a Labourer in Sydney where he and Mary raised their family.

In 1920, Leslie was fourteen years of age and working as a Storeman in Dawes Point in Sydney when he enlisted in the Cadets (Service No:111171). Following his father's death in 1923, he moved with his mother to Paddington in Sydney where he worked as a Storeman. In 1933 Leslie married Essie Victoria Luscombe (b1906 in Sydney, NSW) - Essie was a Clerk. Leslie and Essie settled in Sydney where he worked as a Storeman. In June 1942 Leslie enlisted in the RAAF and was a Corporal (Service No:66519) attached to 2 Stores Depot when he was Discharged in November 1945.

Following his Discharge, Leslie and Essie continued living in Sydney where he worked as a Storeman before retiring to Empire Bay. Essie died in 1986 and Leslie in 1991.
