Let us remember a Fallen soldier and his brother of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.

On the 29th May 1917, Private Thomas Dix, 34th Battalion (Reg No-412), labourer from 98 Denison Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, was Killed in Action at Ploegsteert Wood, Belgium, age 30. Cause of death probably enemy artillery shelling.

No Roll of Honour circular submitted.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.

Born at Ashton, Makerfield, Lancashire, England on the 1st August 1886 to Thomas (died tragically 30.10.1893, Newcastle, N.S.W., age?) of Fern Street, Islington, N.S.W., and Elizabeth Dix nee Simm (died 30.7.1892, Hamilton, N.S.W., age?, no death or funeral notice located); adopted parents James and Elspeth Wilson, of "Stone House", Newcastle Road, Wallsend, N.S.W., Tom enlisted on the 27th January 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A20 Hororata on the 2nd May 1916.

Mr. Dix is resting at the Strand Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot III Row B Grave 10.

Place of Association – Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Tom’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial and the Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor.

Younger brother Maurice Dix (also known as Jimmy and Jim Dixie, born 15.3.1889, Greta, New South Wales, horse trainer from 98 Denison Street, Hamilton, New South Wales (with sister), enlisted 24.7.1915, 30th Battalion, Reg No-411, KIA 9.8.1918, Battle of Amiens, age 29, bombardier, 5th Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery, resting at Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, France. Plot I Row A Grave 2.

I was joined on the morning of the 6th July 2019 by Great Niece Kaye Thomas and Great Great Niece Louise Waugh in placing 2 Memorial crosses, remembering and honouring the supreme sacrifice of their 2 descendants at the unmarked graves of parents Thomas and Elizabeth Dix. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) B SE. 39.
