Alfred, the forename he chose over Sydney, was the third son of Frederick William Barnard Godrich, a civil servant and Julia Maria Muriel Godrich, of 3 Windsor Road, Denmark Hill. He was baptised at Holy Trinity Church Clapham on 11th August 1893. The address of the family on the baptism register was 10 Fitzwilliam Road.  Frederick and Julia had four other children- Edward, Amy, John Fred, Alice Sophia Godrich.

Frederick was the holder of the I.S.O.[ Imperial Service Order] and he and Julia lived at one time at  "Montrose," 49, Fontenoy Rd., Balham, London, England.

He attended St Cutherbert's College, Sparken Hill, Worksop, between 1907 and 1909. In 1911 he was an apprentice in a drapery warehouse. He was also training for the ministry.

Alfred enlisted in the Australian Infantry and served with the 7th battalion. He embarked on HMAT Runic which sailed from Melbourne on 20th June 1916 bound for the Western Front.

He is remembered on the Memorial to the fallen of Worksop College at the college.
