Flight Sergeant Bruce Charlton West (Service No:443823) initially served as a Cadet with 2 Wing HQ Air Training Corps (ATC) from April 1942, before enlisting in the RAAF at No 2 Recruiting Station Sydney on 4 December 1943 as an Aircraftman II - mustered as Air Crew. Described in his Attestation Papers (NAA) as 'Keen. Alert. Intelligent for age', ACII West progressed to Co-Pilot with over 500 Flying Hours in Avro Anson, DH 82 Tiger Moth and Dakota C47A aircraft. Flight Sergeant West was attached to 33 Squadron at Discharge on 10 April 1946.
Bruce was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1925, fourth of six children of Russel Charlton West (b1890 in Leichardt, New South Wales) and Merle Marjorie Southion (b1893 in Maclean, Clarence River, New South Wales). Russel and Merle married in 1919 in Sydney, where they settled and raised their family and Russel was a Draftsman until his death in 1936. Merle later remarried.
Bruce was working in Sydney as a Junior Clerk with the Taxation Department when he enlisted in the RAAF. Following his Dicharge, he was a Clerk in Sydney in 1948 when he married Jean McFarlane. Bruce and Jean settled in Sydney, where Bruce worked as a Clerk until his death in 1950.
