When Alfred Alexander Hartley was born on 17 May 1925 in Chinchilla, Queensland, his father, John, was 40 and his mother, Ruby, was 27.

He married Mavis Lilian Keese on 22 August 1947.

He died on 11 October 1988 in Brisbane, Queensland, at the age of 63.
