John Thomas Higgins lost two brothers during WW1. 1349 Pte William Joseph Higgins, 13th Battalion was killed in action at Gallipoli 9 August 1915 and 1651 Pte Albert Harley Higgins 45th Battalion, died of wounds three years later on 9 August 1918.

John was wounded in action at Fromelles 19 July 1916 and returned to the fray in late August 1916. He was promoted to Corporal during April 1917 and was wounded a second time on 26 September 1917. He suffered severe gunshot wounds to his legs and was evacuated to England.

He was promoted to Lance Sergeant upon his return to the front during June 1918. He was wounded in action for the third time on 1 September 1918, a penetrating gunshot to the chest, and was again evacuated to England. He returned to Australia during early 1919.
