Thomas embarked with the 50th Battalion on HMAT A 73 Commonwealth on 21 September 1916, reaching Plymouth, England on 14 November. His unit was sent to France on 12 December on the S.S.Arundel. Thomas spent the latter part of December in hospital in Etaples in France and Southall in England with severe influenza. On 23 May 1917 he was diagnosed with deafness of the right ear and was invalided to Australia being discharged as medically unfit on 27 August. Thomas was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
