Flying Officer George Claud Notman (Service No:401317) enlisted in the RAAF on 1 February 1941 at No 1 Recruiting Cntre Melbourne and was an Aircraftman I at No 1 Initial Training School (ITS) Somers when he was promoted to Leading Aircraftman. Through 1941 LAC Notman was attached to No 1 Service Flying Training School (SFTS), No 1 Air Observers' School (AOS) Cootamundra, No 1 Bombing and Gunnery School (BAGS) Evans Head, and No 1 Air Navigation School (ANS) Parkes. On 8 January 1942 he was promoted to Navigator/Sergeant and attended No 5 Service Training School (SFTS) and No 1 Engineering School Ascot Vale and was promoted to Flight Sergeant on 8 July 1942 at No 2 Embarkation Depot Bradfield Park. He embarked for the UK on 24 August 1942 where he was attached to the RAF as crew member of night bombing raids over Germany, and promoted to Flying Officer with 460 and 550 Squadrons. Pilot Officer Notman was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in August 1944 and Discharged on 9 February 1945.

Claud was born in Ballarat, Victoria in 1915, eldest of four children of Albert Parsons Notman (b1886 in Skipton, Victoria) and Janet Mary Pender (b1889 in Smythesdale, Victoria). Albert (a Farmer) and Janet married in 1914 in Scarsdale, Victoria and settled in Skipton where they raised their family and Albert was a Farmer.

Claud attended The Geelong College where he was in the Cadets, in the 1st XVIII Footbal Team, a Prefect and member of the Pegasus Committee. He worked as a Labourer/Farmer on the family property and in 1942 in Geelong married Mary (Molly) Eliza Piper (b1917 in Geelong, Victoria. Following his Discharge, Claud and Molly settled in Skipton where they raised their family and Claud was a Grazier and Author - in 1961 he co-authored The Geelong College Centenary History and in 1981 was author of 'Of Sheep and Men - a story of the flocks, the founders and descendants of Victoria's Western Plains'. Claud died in 1999 and Molly in 2002.
