The Minmi Roll of Honour has 79 names inscribed of those who returned home from The Great War.
The 44th name inscribed is Private William John Edward (Tom) Ellis.
On the 11th September 1954, Private William John Edward (Tom) Ellis, 55th Battalion (Reg No-1642), hatter (Back Creek Colliery), from Back Creek, Minmi, New South Wales and possibly Cecilia Street, Belmore, N.S.W., father of three (Reg, Natalie, John), died at the Concord Repatriation General Hospital, N.S.W., age 62 years 7 months.

Ellis nee O'Connor, married 1920, Paddington, N.S.W., age 64?, died 1964?
William enlisted on the 8th February 1916 with the 35th Battalion, age 25 years, at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 1st May 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 9.7.1916.
Taken on Strength 55th Battalion 9.9.1916.
Proceeded O/Seas to France from Southampton, England 9.9.1916.
Admitted to hospital 11.11.1916 (scabies and dermatitis), 25.1.1917 (eczema)
Wounded in action - 2.4.1917 (GSW left leg, mild), 1.9.1918 (GSW right arm).
Granted furlough in England from 4.6.1917 to 19.6.1917.
Invalided to England 5.9.1918.
Commenced return to Australia 18.1.1919.
William arrived home on the 4th March 1919, not being discharged until the 24th April 1921.

William’s name has also been inscribed on the Wickham Superior Public School Roll of Honour, unveiled on the 27th July 1918, 263 names originally inscribed, 326 names now inscribed, 48 Fallen, installed at the Newcastle Interchange, 2017.
