Biography contributed by Geoffrey Gillon

William was 27 and the son of the late Peter Robertson McGill and Elizabeth (Tod) McGill of 15 Bridge Street, Kirkcudbright. He enlisted in January 1915 and was posted to the 28th Battalion sailing from Freemantle in June 1915. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in early September but was killed two weeks later and buried at Chailak Dere. William was re-interred after the war.

He is remembered on the Kirkcudbright war memorials-the one which stands outside MacLellans castle, Kirkcudbright and on the St. Cuthbert's Church Memorial in Kirkcudbright.
