Sergeant Eric Edward Salter (Service No:30327) initially served with Cadets (106 Howitzer Battery) before enlisting in the ACMF on 18 March 1939 as a Gunner attached to 117 Heavy Battery RAA. On 11 June 1940 he enlisted in the RAAF as an Aircraftman 1 at No 6 Recruiting Centre Hobart - mustered as Clerk General - and posted to 1 Recruit Depot Laverton. In October 1940 ACI Salter was posted to HQ South Area Melbourne and promoted to Leading Aircraftman on 13 January 1941.  A Sergeant by March 1941, he served in the Northern Territory (54 Mile, Winnellie and Darwin) with 2 Reserve Personnel Pool and No 43 Squadron. Sergeant Salter was attached to No 43 Squadron at Discharge on 28 January 1946. His two siblings - Rex and Don - also served in WWII.

Ted was born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1919, eldest of three children of Eric Harold Salter (b1892 in St Marys, Tasmania) and Eileen Victoria Nichols (b1894 in Richmond, Tasmania). Eric worked as a Railway Porter before enlisting in WWI (Lieutenant; Service No:2276) and was a Clerk with the Department of Treasury in 1918 when he and Eileen married in Hobart, where they settled and raised their family.

On leaving school, Ted worked as a Clerk for the Royal Yacht Squad and Burgess Bros Wholesale Merchants before joining T & G Life Assurance Society in 1938. In December 1941 Ted married Corrie Victoria (b1922) and they were divorced in 1947 - both remarried. Following his Discharge, Ted returned to Hobart where he was working as an Insurance Inspector in 1949 when he married Beverley Margaret Castley (b1926 in Hobart, Tasmania). Ted and Beverley lived in Franklin and Hobart where they raised their family and Ted was an Inspector. Ted died in 2003 and Beverley in 2005.
