Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Boer War Veteran And
Ship-lover Dies
A man who could recall many a tale of the days of sail and of incidents during the South African War, died at Bunbury on June 24. He was William Theodore Wheeler, aged 77. He was one of the few remaining South African war veterans in Bunbury. Three
other such veterans, Mr. T. Shaw, Mr. H. Joel and Mr. P. Foale, were among the pallbearers at his funeral.
A lover of ships and the sea, Mr. Wheeler gained his first mate's ticket in sail. Also a World War 1 digger,he left Bunbury with the 28th Battalion in 1916. Following World War 1, Mr. Wheeler was employed with Millars Timber and Trading Co. He resigned from this position owing to ill-health and was for several years employed as a tally clerk on the Bunbury wharf.
The death of his son, Flight-Lieut. Bernie Wheeler, during World War II, was a severe blow to Mr. Wheeler and it was about this time that his health began to decline.
Since his retirement Mr. Wheeler had lived quietly at his Austral-parade home, his keenest enjoyment being a chat with old mates. The Rev. Charles Dunn officiated at the funeral, which was in the Anglican portion of the Bunbury cemetery on June 26.
The pall-bearers were Messrs. T. Shaw, H Joel, P. Foale, G. Turner, W T Prosser, C. Hansen, E. W. Piggott and J. C Jolly.
The late Mr. Wheeler left a widow.
