Distinguished Flying Cross
Distinguished Flying Cross - Awarded to Flying Officer Cyril J. Woolnough, Mr A. J. Woolnough, of the Whitton Post 'Office, N.S.W., has received the following communication from the Air Board informing him that his son, Flying Officer Cyril J. Woolnough, who was born in Moama 25 years ago, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
The citation is as follows: "Flying Officer Woolnough has consistently shown great skill, courage, and determination as pilot and captain of aircraft. He has completed numerous operational sorties against heavily defended targets. On several occasions his aircraft has been severely, damaged by anti-aircraft fire, but despite all opposition he has invariably continued to fly his aircraft to the allotted target and press home his attack. In May 1944, this officer's aircraft was detailed for an attack against Lille and on the way to the target it was engaged by anti-aircraft fire, one engine and the front and mid-upper turrets being damaged and rendered unserviceable. Undaunted, flying Officer Woolnough continued to the target and successfully completed the mission. This officer's fine leadership and devotion to duty have won the admiration of all.
H. P. Winneke, Group Captain, Director of Personal Services. Flying Officer Woolnough is one of the Pathfinder Squadron. Prior to enlisting he resided at Burgoney, near Lake Cargelligo, and after enlisting in Melbourne was trained at Sommers and Temora and received his wings at Point Cook.
He went overseas in March 1943, sailing for England. Mr and Mrs H. J. Woolnough received a letter from their son stating that he had returned from, another operational flight, and that he had been promoted to the rank of Flight Lieutenant. Flight Lieutenant Woolnough is a nephew of Mr and Mrs W. Myer of Moama.
