Robert was the son of John and Isa. He had at least two older siblings, James Percy and Isa Katie. His mother died in Canterbury, Melbourne in 1929. His father had a property near Balranald in the Riverina area of New South Wales, named Tillara Station. Robert's brother James served in the AIF in WWII (Captain, VX89032).

Robert was a POW on board the Italian transport ship Nino Bixio when it was torpedoed by a British submarine in the Mediterranean on 17 August 1942. The Nino Bixio was transporting Allied POWs from Libya to Italy. He was one of the 122 Australian POWs to survive the incident.
