458 Squadron, Bomber Command -
We were ordered to patrol two ships north of Sardinia on 20 March 1943 and light them up, and call out torpedo aircraft to sink them. We ran into a very bad storm which upset our compass and wireless, and whilst flying over the west tip of Sicily our port propeller dropped off and we lost height immediately, finally we had to make a crash landed close to Asiacca aerodrome. The aircraft caught fire and the Italians came across to capture us. They took us to Rome.
Camps in which imprisoned – Quarentine Camp Pogio Materta 30 March 1943 – 21 April 1943, P.G. 78 Sulmona 21 April 1943 – October 1943, Stalag VIIA Moosburg October 1943 – 6 November 1943, Stalag XIA Altengrabow 7 November 1943 – 29 March 1944 and finally Stalag 357 Fallingbostel 01 April 1944 – April 1945.
When Italy collapsed we managed to get out of Sulmona and with 15 Red Cross parcels and cans of water we hid in holes in the mountains, due to wrong information, we were trying to make contact with the British lines, but we were picked up by the Germans after two day.
We were liberated by British and American troops in May 1945.
