Next of kin given as his daughter Edna Irene Upton of Belgrave Avenue, Belgrave Road, Birmingham, England having given his marital status as widower.
5 September 1915 - enlisted at Holsworthy, NSW, with the 1st Battalion and with the rank of Private.
1 January 1918 - promoted to the rank of Driver
7 January 1919 - transferred to AIF Headquarters in London
22 September 1919 - William married Dorothy Carolyn Daws in the Church of St. Luke, Wandsworth, London, England. Vicar C. Erskine Clarke officiated.
9 December 1919 - commenced return to Australia aboard HT Borda disembarking on 2 February 1920. Origianally meant to return to Australia aboard HT Waimana but did not embark and on 4 November 1919 was granted indefinite leave
