Russell was the youngest of four children of Robert Green (b1881 in Montrose, Victoria) and Esther (Ettie) Georgina Turley (b1884 in Heywood, Victoria). Robert (a Blacksmith) and Ettie married in 1907 in Penshurst, Victoria where they settled and raised their family.

Russell was a Painter in Melbourne, Victoria when he enlisted in the RAAF in January 1942 - the year he married Joyce Beverley Foote (b1921 in Melbourne, Victoria). Russell was a Leading Aircraftman (Service No:50256) attached to 1 Stores Depot when he was Discharged in December 1945.

Russell and Joyce settled in Melbourne, Victoria where Russell worked as a Painter. By 1968 the couple had Divorced and Russell worked a Foreman in Glen Waverley. He died in 1987 and Joyce died in 2017.
