Youngest of four brothers (George, Allan and Gordon) who served in WWII, Leading Aircraftman John Arthur Conwell (Service No:150079) initially enlisted as a Cadet with 3 Air Wing Training Corps (ATC) on 17 June 1942. LAC Conwell enlisted in the RAAF on 1 July 1943 at No 3 Recruiting Centre Brisbane as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Trainee Technical, re mustered as Fitter. Described as 'a good type of lad, being conscientious, reliabel and quick to learn' (NAA), he was promoted to LAC on 2 November 1944, and was attached to 3 Stores Depot at Discharge on 13 May 1946.

John was born in Nambour QLD in 1925, sixth of eight children of Thomas (Tom) Conwell (b1888 in Glasgow, Scotland) and Mary Chadwick (b1889 in Lancashire, England). Tom was a Farmer's son in 1908 when he immigrated, arriving in Brisbane on board the Orotave, and Mary was a Cotton Weaver in 1913 when she arrived in Brisbane on board the Omrah. Tom (a Farmer) and Mary (a Probationary Nurse) married in 1917 in Nambour, where they lived and raised their their family and Tom was a Farmer. In the early 1930s the family moved to Brisbane, where Tom worked as a Labourer.

John started work in Brisbane as a Clerk with the Victoria Insurance Co Ltd, and following his Discharge from the RAAF returned to Brisbane and work as an Insurance Clerk. In 1954 in Brisbane he married Christine (Meg) Margaret Robertson (b1933 in Brisbane, QLD). John and Meg settled in Brisbane, where they raised their family and John worked in the Insurance Industry as a Clerk, Manager and Broker. In the 1970s/1980s John and Meg were in Auckland, New Zealand and Sydney NSW - John was a Company Director - before retiring to Buderim. Meg died in 2015 and John in 2019.
