Eldest of three brothers who served in the RAAF in WWII, Flight Lieutenant Arthur Frank Walker (Service No:428126) enlisted in the RAAF on 29 December 1942 at No 6 Recruiting Centre Hobart as an Aircraftman II - mustered as Air Crew. On 9 December 1943 he was Appointed to Commission as Pilot Officer (and flew aircraft including CAC Wackett-DH84, Anson, Wellington, Stirling and Lancaster). Flying Officer Walker served in Egland (attached to the RAF - including RAF Station Hereford, 27 OTU Lichfield, 75 Base, 5 Lancaster Finishing School (LFS) Syerston and RAF Manston) from 29 January 1944 to 4 November 1945. Flight Lieutenant (described by his Commanding Officer (NAA)1945) as 'an excellent type of junior officer with good trade qualifications') was attached to 463 Squadron at Discharge on 3 January 1946.
Fred was born in Willaura, Victoria in 1917, third of five children (and eldest son) of William John Walker (b1881 in Willaura, Victoria) and Sarah Withers (b1883 at Long Gully, Victoria). William and Sarah married in 1913 in Willaura, where they settled and raised their family and William was a Farmer.
Fred worked as a Grocer in Willaura, where he met his wife Susie (Peg) Beris Brumby (b1904 in Launceston, Tasmania) - Peg worked as a Saleswoman in Devonport, Tasmania and was a Saleswoman in Bendigo in 1936. Fred and Peg moved to Tasmania, where they married in Devonport in 1940, and settled in Burnie, where Fred was a Grocery and Hardware Salesman with Don Trading Coy when he enlisted in the RAAF in 1942. Following his Discharge, Fred and Peg lived in Circular Head and Braddon, where Fred was a Sales Manager and Store Manager, before settling in Launceston, where Peg died in 1989 and Fred in 1994.
