Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

One of five siblings (Greg, Gordon, Bill and Ken) who served in WWII, Pilot Officer Samuel Joseph Davies (Service No:46398) enlisted in the RAAF on 12 February 1942 at No 4 Recruiting Centre Perth as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Flight Mechanic, re mustered as Fitter. Leading Aircraftman Davies was attached to No 4 Aircraft Depot in May 1943, and was a Pilot Officer attached to 6 Stores Depot at Discharge on 15 July 1944 (Medically Unfit).

Born in Boulder, Western Australia in 1908, Sam was fourth of nine children of Samuel Romney Davies (b1878 in Wasleys, South Australia) and Maude McKennay (b1883 in Kapunda, South Australia). Samuel (a Miner) and Maude married in 1902 in Boulder, and settled in Toodyay on Strathavon Farm in 1910. Samuel was an Orchardist, and in 1940 he and Maude moved to Wattle Grove in Canning.

Sam worked as a Tractor Driver at Goodlands via Dalwalinu, and in 1930 in Perth married Lillian Hilda Inman Barlow (b1908 in Fremantle, Western Australia). Sam and Lillian settled in Kalgoorlie, where Sam was a Commercial Traveller/Business Manager before enlisting in the RAAF in 1940. Following his Discharge, Sam settled in Dunsborough, where he was a Farmer. In August 1951 he and Lillian divorced, and in December Sam remarried in Bunbury to Evelyn Deimel Meatcham (nee Sabine; b1909 in Coolgardie, Western Australia). Sam and Evelyn settled in Dunsborough, where Sam was a Farmer until the late 1950s. In 1963, Sam and Evelyn were living in Muntagin via York, where Sam was Proprietor and Evelyn was House Manageress of the Hotel. In the late 1960s they moved to Safety Bay, where Sam worked as a Clerk and Salesman until his death in 1974. Evelyn died in 1998.
