His brothers, 1758 Pte Thomas John Stephens, 57th Battalion, killed in action Pozieres, 13 days before on 7 August 1916, 970 Sergeant William Stephens an original member of the 12th Battalion, landed at Gallipoli, was also badly wounded at Pozieres on 20 August 1916 and returned to Australia, 13 February 1917.
