Leading Aircraftman Alan Clive Dare (Service No:72673) enlisted in the RAAF on 10 October 1942 at No 2 Recruiting Centre Sydney as an Aircraftman I - mustered as Trainee Technician, re mustered as Fitter DMT. Promoted to Leading Aircraftman in 1943, he served with 55 Operational Base Unit (OBU) Birdum and 51 OBU Groote Eyelandt. In 1944 LAC Dare was in the Northern Territory, attached to 56 OBU Gove and 4 Repair and Salvage Unit (RSU) Pell. LAC Dare was attached to 1 Stores Depot at Discharge on 5 October 1945.
Alan was born in Grafton, New South Wales in 1914, youngest of two children of John Nelson Hardy (b1869 in London, England) and Ada Amelia Augusta Cherry (b1886 in London, England). John (a Pianoforte Tuner) and Ada married in London in 1908, and immigrated with their son in 1911, arriving in Sydney on board the Medic. Following John's death in 1917, Ada remarried to Alfred Ernest Dare (b1881 in Sholhaven, New South Wales). Alfred was a Dairy Expert, Engineer and Butter Factory Manager.
Alan completed a five year apprenticeship in dairy product processing, and worked in Goulburn as a Butter Maker. In 1938 in Goulburn he married Joan Bartholomew (b1916 in Tumut, New South Wales). Alan and Joan settled in Glen Innes, where they raised their family and Alan was an Engine Driver and Refrigeration Mechanic with the Glen Innes Co-Op Dairy Society when he enlisted in the RAAF in 1942. Following his Discharge from the RAAF, Alan and Jean lived in Bathurst, where Alan was a Milk and Cream Tester with Bathurst Dairying Coy Ltd. In the early 1950s the family moved to Temora, where Alan was Superintendent, then settling in Sydney in the early 1960s. Alan worked as a Stores Clerk until retirement in the 1970s, when Alan and Joan moved to Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast, QLD. Alan died in 1992 and Joan in 2001.
