Alfred 'Alf' Gibson COLBEY was the sixth child and the third son of Charles Hammond and Annie Elizabeth (PRICE) COLBEY.

At the time of his enlistment, the family was living at Maylands, suburban Adelaide. 

At Gallipoli, he was promoted to corporal and was again promoted to Sergeant when stationed near Pozieres, France on 30th July, 1916.

On 28 August, 1916, he was mentioned for "good and gallant conduct in connection with the recent hard fighting round Pozieres".

He was killed near Flers, France 5th November, 1916 and his body buried SW of Baupaume, France, reinterred in 1922 at the Warlencourt British Cemetery, France.

One older brother, Frank Hammond COLBEY was also serving in France with the 10th battalion.

Biography

"LATE SGT. A. G. COLBEY.

News has been received by Mrs. C. H. Colbey, of Frederick street, Maylands, that her son, Sgt. A. G. Colbey, was killed in action in France on November 5. Sgt. Colbey was 23 years of age. He was born at Crafers. He enlisted in February, 1914, and was with the 27th Battalion at Gallipoli before he went to France. The young soldier was an employe of the firm of Messrs. Harris, Scarfe, & Co., Limited, and was highly respected by employers and employes alike. An elder brother, Lieut. P. H. Colbey, is in France." - from the Adelaide Observer 16 Dec 1916 (nla.gov.au)
