Sergeant Phillip James McIntyre, son of Mr. James McIntyre of Sunshine, enlisted on the 29th of September 1916, and embarked with the 8th Reinforcements to the 57th Battalion on the transport Medic on the 16th of December. While training in England he was transferred to the 67th Battalion and when the 6th Division was disbanded, he was transferred to the 37th Battalion. He joined this unit in France on the 1st of September, 1917. On the 8th of May, 1918, he was wounded in action, but remained on duty. He was promoted to Corporal on the 1st of July, and Sergeant on the 1st of September. On the 14th of December, he was transferred to A.I.F. Headquarters. He returned to Australia on the transport Miltiades in July 1919. He had fought at Zonnebeke and Passchendaele (October 1917), in the trenches at Warneton during the winter of 1917-18, and had gone through the whole of the Somme campaign from the launching of the German offensive in March, 1918, to the taking of the Hindenburg Line at Bony on 29th of September.
Prior to enlisting he was teaching at School No. 1142, Swan Hill.
