Son of William John Howes and Margaret Howes of Redmond Street, Leichhardt, NSW. 

Previously enlisted but was discharged when it was found that he was under age.

Brother of William Henry Howes who was killed in action on 9 October 1917 while serving with the 17th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on Panel 17 of the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres and Arthur David Howes who returned to Australia on 30 March 1916 having served with the 7th Light Horse Regiment

Commenced return to Australia on 26 December 1918 aboard HT Somali disembarking on 10 February 1919.
