Bernard was the son of Albert McLaurin Betts (b1901 in Uralla, NSW) and Vera Marie Corbett (b1904 in Tamworth, NSW). Albert (a Guard) and Vera married in 1922 in Tamworth NSW and by 1930 had settled in Newcastle NSW where they raised their family and Albert worked as a Guard.

In January 1943 Bernard enlisted in the RAAF and was a Leading Aircraftman (Service No:74889) attached to 5 School of Tecnical Drawing when he was Discharged in February 1946. That year he married Dorothy Gwen Fraser (b1925 in Wynyard, Tasmania) in Newcastle NSW - Dorothy had also served in the RAAF (Aircraftwoman; Service No:112029). Bernard and Dorothy settled in Newcastle where Bernard worked as a Clerk. Dorothy died in 1972 and Bernard in 1975.
