Warrant Officer II John Sherman (Service No:31472) served in the Army in the Vietnam War (25 June 1968 - 26 March 1969) with AFV Detachment 55 Engineer Workshop and Park Squadron RAE. He initially enlisted in the RAAF on 16 August 1942 as a Cadet (Service No:2079) in the Air Training Corps (ATC) attached to No 1 Wing 6 Squadron. As an Aircraftman I (Service No:450619), he served in the RAAF from 23 February 1945 to 22 September 1945 and was attached to No 4 School of Technical Training Adelaide - mustered as Air Crew Trainer, he requested re muster as Carpenter. ACI Sherman was described on entry to the RAAF as having a  'Good record in ATC. This lad has found his feet in ATC and worked splendidly' (NAA; Squadron Leader JH Sinclair). Older half brothers Arhie and Hughie also served in WWII.

Jack was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1926, youngest of three children of William (Bill) John Sherman (b1873 in Mansfield, Victoria) and his second wife Dorothy Victoria Murcell (b1899 in Melbourne, Victoria). Bill (a Widower with four children) and Dorothy married in 1923 in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Bill was a Labourer. Dorothy died in 1928 in NSW and Bill had returned to Melbourne by the early 1940s.

Jack was an Apprentice Furniture Maker (HA Branchflower Melbourne) when he joined the RAAF. In the mid 1960s he was stationed with the Army in Perth, WA where he married Nancy Dawn Auger (b1939 in Kalgoorlie, WA) - Nancy was a Nurse in Perth. Following his Discharge from the Army, in the early 1970s Jack and Nancy settled in Dumbleyung WA, where Jack was a Club Manager. Jack died in 2008 and Nancy in 2022.
