Daughter of Charles James ADDISON and Margaret May ADDISON nee LYNCH
Joyce Ellemor (nèe Addison) was born in West Perth in Western Australia 100 years ago today. She grew up in the Perth Girl’s Orphanage, then went into foster care before working as a shop assistant in a cardboard box factory and as a live-in pantry maid at a school.
Joyce is a Second World War veteran. She joined the Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF) on 12 January 1944 and was posted to No. 3 WAAAF Depot at Karrinyup WA for recruit training. Joyce was noted as an ‘earnest type, neat appearance’ and was recommended to work as an office orderly. In February 1944, she was posted to No. 5 School of Technical Training at Perth Barracks as an office orderly, with the rank of aircraftwoman. Joyce also occasionally operated the switchboard as a telephonist. In September 1944, after gaining more experience, Joyce’s proficiency in office work was recognised with her appointment as a clerk. She made some very dear friends while serving, including Nancy Cornish, who enlisted in the WAAAF on the same day as Joyce, and who later became her bridesmaid.
In December 1944, while still serving, Joyce married Maurice ‘Maurie’ Ellemor, who was serving in the Royal Australian Navy as a stoker in the corvette HMAS Dubbo. On 21 February 1945, Joyce was discharged from the WAAAF ‘on compassionate grounds’.
Joyce and Maurie went on the have 5 children and Joyce became a full-time wife and mother. Maurie very sadly died in 1974 at the age of 49. Joyce had to return to work and found a job in an industrial factory which involved heaving lifting and sewing canvas and rubber products. She also cleaned houses to keep on top of the bills. Joyce now has 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Sadly, 2 of her children have passed away.
In her spare time, Joyce enjoyed playing darts, ten pin bowling, carpet bowls and lawn bowls. She also liked sewing, knitting and travelling. Nowadays Joyce loves to do puzzles.
Joyce credits her longevity to being active and clean living.
