Sergeant Albert Francis Coates (Service No:30408) enlisted in the RAAF on 12 June 1940 as an Aircraftman I and mustered as a Clerk - Signals. He served at Hobart, Laverton, Bradfield Park, Melbourne, Townsville, Port Moresby and Morotai and was a Sergeant attached to 1 TAF TELECOM at Discharge on 7 December 1945.

Born in 1922 in Launceston Tasmania, Bert was the eldest of four children of George Robert Coates (b1892 at Kinara Junction, Tasmania) and Ella Elizabeth Partridge (b1896 in Launceston, Tasmania). George served with the AIF in WWI and was a Horse Driver in Launceston in 1921 when he and Ella married. The couple settled in Launceston where they raised their family and George was a Postal Worker.

Bert started work in 1937 as a Telegraph Messenger with the PMGs Department in Launceston. In 1942 in Melbourne Victoria, Bert married Edna Marie Turner (b1920 in Sydney, NSW). Bert intended returning to work with the PMGs Department in Hobart following his Discharge(National Archives Australia)- he and Edna settled in Sydney NSW where Bert joined the Public Service as a Clerk. By his retirement in 1983, Bert was Assistant Director of the Department of Social Security. He was awarded an MBE in the 1983 New Years Honours List 'for service to the handicapped and veterans' (Trove). Edna died in 1972 and Bert in 1989.
