Ruth was the third of five children of William Bartlett (b1887 in Bathurst NSW) and Ellen Betsy Hughes (b1892 in Yass NSW). William (a Plasterer) and Ellen married in 1916 in Sydney NSW and settled in Orange NSW where they raised their family. Following Elsie's death in 1946, William moved to Cronulla NSW where he worked as a Plasterer.

In 1942 Ruth was working as a Typist when she enlisted in the WRAAF (Corporal; Service No:93800) and was attached to 2 Training Group when she was Discharged in December 1945. Siblings Alan and Audrey also served in WWII.

Ruth settled in Cronulla NSW where she was a Typist before following sister Audrey to British Columbia, Canada in the late 1950s. Rurh died in Canada in 1996.
